Style & character
The 1 Hotels are an eco concept by W hotel chain founder Barry Sternlicht. The interior is designed by NYC hipster firm AvroKo to feel like an enchanted forest. Ivy grows up the outside of the building and on the inside 24,000 plants dangle from the lobby ceiling, climb up the walls and surprise you in the shower. Guests get a wooden room key (digital chip inside). Enormous slices of oak line the elevators, reclaimed barn wood is used for the headboards and the hotel’s front door is decorated with locust tree twigs.
Service & facilities
A Tesla premium electric vehicle is available for free rides within a 15-block radius. There’s free valet parking for electric vehicles and bikes. The Fieldhouse fitness centre (with cork walls and giant windows) has the latest gym gear, and the Hive is a beautifully designed business area for lounging, meetings and for a change of scene. There is also a 24-hour concierge service and room service. This is a dog friendly hotel – beds, bowls, poo bags, healthy pet food and even a doggy concierge offers local doggy tips.
The 229 rooms are beautifully appointed with craft made furniture and interesting details like bedheads made of salvaged wood from water towers and barns. The plush Keetsa mattresses are hemp filled and the sheets are 100 per cent organic cotton. The separate bathrooms are lined with unusual Breccia Capraia marble and have stone sinks and copper taps. Clever eco touches abound including triple filtered drinking and bathing water, a reusable chalk board in place of a notepad, recycled paper hangers and a five-minute timer in the shower (optional). Sixty rooms have a window seat overlooking Central Park. Guests also get a Bluetooth speaker, in-room mobile phone and yoga mat.
