This glamorous city centre hotel is a favourite with the Shanghai’s fashion set, who come to shoot magazine covers in the sleek minimalist lobby, peacock with friends at the Long Bar, boast of getting a table at one Michelin star Phenix and rejuvenate in the shadowy spa.
Discreetly tucked away behind a bamboo screen in middle of jumping Jing An, The Puli manages to be in the heart of the action while at the same time feeling like your very own hideaway. Fronting the hotel is Jing An Temple and Jing An Park, stop by the latter at sunset to see the city’s pensioners ballroom dancing under willow trees.
Address: 1 Changde Road, Shanghai, 200040, China.
Style & character
Designed within an inch of its life, stepping into the lobby feels like gliding into a Tom Ford advert – all polished black stone floors, minimalist lines, spotlighted antiques and beautiful people. In the summer months, the outdoor terrace is the place to see and be seen, while in winter you’ll want to snag a space in front of the fireplace in the low-lit library.
Service & facilities
The Puli’s boutique vibe belies its large scale facilities, which includes a wellness centre, where a series of sliding doors lead to jet pools, saunas, steam rooms and a gorgeous 25-metre indoor swimming pool facing the soothing greenery of Jing An park. There’s also a fitness centre, business centre and executive rooms with lounge access. A few more smiles from the doormen and reception staff wouldn’t go amiss, but, otherwise staff were pleasant and professional.
The Puli’s spa comes from the renowned Thai hotel and wellness group Anantara. Treatments inspired by anti-oxidant rich tea – think chrysanthemum tea and pearl wraps, rose tea scrubs and herbal compress massages – are performed by businesslike therapists in five small teak-lined treatment rooms.

The 229 rooms are sleek sensual spaces, with lashings of dark wood, crisp white beds and huge soapstone bathtubs looking out over the city – all very zen. Complimentary minibar items – soft drinks, beers and sweeties – are included, along with locally-produced Tibetan rose toiletries and Wi-Fi.
Food & drink
Edging the length of the lobby, the 105-foot Long Bar attracts creative types with its glossy good looks and extensive list of wines and champagnes. Up on the second floor, Phenix restaurant serves beautifully presented French classics – confit of duck, baby turbot meunière – and has garnered its first Michelin star under the supervision of newly appointed chef Michael Wilson. Breakfast is superb.
